Step-by-Step Guide (2025)
Before you can take lessons or book tests you must hold a provisional driving licence.
Apply online via the official GOV.UK service: Apply for your provisional licence. You can also use a D1 paper form from a Post Office.
Fee: £34 online (£43 by post). Delivery is usually within a week when applying online.

Tip: Learners typically take 40–50 hours of professional instruction on average before test-ready — but individual needs vary.
The Theory Test has two parts: multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception video test.
Book online at GOV.UK — book theory test. Bring your provisional licence on test day.
Your theory pass certificate is valid for 2 years — you must pass the practical test within that time.
After your instructor confirms you are ready, book the practical test. The test includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions ("show me, tell me"), independent driving and manoeuvres.
Test duration: ~40 minutes.
Tip: Arrive 15–20 minutes early and bring your provisional licence and theory pass number. A mock test before the practical test is often recommended.
Pass the practical test and your examiner will take your provisional licence — the DVLA will send your full driving licence to your address (usually within 2–3 weeks).
If you fail, you can rebook the practical test after 10 working days.
